Solid Waste Reduction
Recycled Instruments
2016 - 2019
Each year in Instrumental Music, our 4th grade students learn about Paraguay's Landfill Orchestra. This community of children create instruments from items in their landfill since purchasing actual instruments can be quite expensive. Our students then create their own functioning instruments from recycled materials.

Cartridges for Kids
2016 - 2019
Each school year, the fifth grade students create advertisements to collect cartridges to recycle through the program Cartridges For Kids. Students then collect recyclable electronics from teachers, students, and families by setting up a donation box. Students also box the recyclable electronics, and prepare them to be shipped. This project helps us recycle cartridges that would otherwise end up in the landfills.

January 25, 2017
In collaboration with MDE, Wellwood particapted in a trash free lunch day. On January 11th, the trash in the cafeteria was weighed to see the amount of waste Wellwood makes in one day. Teachers promoted and taught lessons on how to make a waste free lunch. On January 25, students brought lunches that contained little to no waste. Wellwood staff members and MDE helped students sort their lunches into recycling, composting, and waste.

Bottle Cap Murals
March 2018
Wellwood's Green Team designed and created bottle cap murals. In order to gather the caps, the students created collection bins in the cafeteria and lobby which reduced the waste we are creating. Students worked in teams to create a design that was related to the environment. Students sorted and attached bottles caps to their designs. The murals are displayed in Wellwood's school building.
